Father was named Henry De Hobun Devereux. AWMM - THE DEVEREUX MEMORIAL SHIELD At least 12 men from the small country town of Waiuku volunteered for service during the South African War.
However, the town’s only memorial of the war is dedicated to a non-resident, Corporal Rodney Talbot Devereux. Corporal Devereux, who was killed at Rhenoster Kop on 29 November 1900, was the brother of Mrs Muriel Makgill of ‘Brackmont’, Waipipi, near Waiuku. In December 1900 members of the Waiuku Mounted Rifles and friends resolved to erect a memorial to him in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. This took the form of a substantial memorial shield with an inscribed brass plate mounted on a mahogany board. The shield is 75 cm high and 75 cm wide.
The inscription reads: ‘In memoriam / Corporal Rodney Devereux / son of the / Hon. H. De B. Devereux / who was killed in / action in the defence / of his country / in South Africa / 29th November 1900.’ In the centre is a 20 x 30 cm copper panel with a relief sculpture depicting a wounded trooper standing at defiance, with the words ‘Honour the brave’ below. The maker was an Auckland silversmith, A. Kohn.
The shield was removed from Holy Trinity when the church was closed and deconsecrated in July 2014. It is now held in the Waiuku Museum, 40 kms SE of Auckland.

New Zealand Herald, 7 December 1900 (casualty lists and obituary) AWMM - THE LATE CORPORAL DEVEREUX.
Aucklanders will deeply regret to see in the list of "killed" in the Reitfontein fight the name of a young Aucklander, Corporal Rodney Devereux ,of the Second Contingent, New Zealand Mounted Infantry. The late Corporal Devereux, who was only 22 years of age. was a son of the Hon. H. de Bohun Devereux, of the Auckland Customs. He was an old St. John's College boy, and was a corporal in the College Rifles. He had been in the employ of Messrs A. Clark and Sons, in Auckland, prior to joining the Second Contingent, His relatives had anticipated his arrival home here about Christmas, as his recent letters had stated that he had fallen behind his contingent through having lost his horse, and that he contemplated leaving for home after serving a time in the military police.
Yesterday Mr Devereux received the following telegram from the Premier: "Deeply regret to inform you that Governor at Capetown cabled me that No. 435, Corporal Rodney Devereux, was killed in recent action at Reitfontein. You have my sincere heartfelt sympathy, and the consolation, small though it be, that he died a noble death, fighting for the Empire."Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 10 February 2016 - Auckland Star, Volume XXXI, Issue 291, 7 December 1900, Page 5
