Biographical information
- Son of Fortescue Zohrab and of Blanche Zohrab (nee Mabin), of Silverstream, Wellington; husband of Margaret Ethel Zohrab, of Whangarei
Was well-known master on the teaching staff of Whangarei High School. He was educated at Wellington College and later at Victoria University College, where he gained an MA with honours in languages. His first appointment was at Palmerston North High School which he resigned in 1938 to take up the position of senior English Master at Whangarei High School. In his college days he was a prominent boxer as well as a member of the Rugby fifteen, but his main interests lay in literary pursuits. He was a member of the Whangarei Library Committee, school librarian and director of the school dramatic club, which under his supervision, staged excellent productions. While at Victoria College, he was a member of the Literary Club, being their medallist for two years, and he was a leading figure in the Palmerston North Repertory Circle.
Volunteering for active service early in the war, he went overseas as a private and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was nominated by his Officers to join the Officer Cadet Training School, but preferred to remain in the ranks. In this capacity his work in the field gained high praise.
He was survived by his wife, the only daughter of Mr W Bendall, of Palmerston North, and two young sons.
Two brothers enlisted. Amyas Constantine Zohrab 62541 and Balfour Douglas Zohrab 4528.
