- DEATH OF MAJOR SELWYN CHAMBERS.
A cable was received by Mr T. Mason Chambers last night, announcing the fact that his son, Major Selwyn Chambers. had been killed in action at the Dardanelles. The news caused quite a gloom in Hastings, where flags are floating haIf-mast today, out of respect to the memory of the young soldier and as an expression of sympathy with his widow & parents. Major Chambers, who was 28 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr & Mrs T. M. Chambers, of Havelock North, & a nephew of Messrs Bernard Chambers (Te Mata) & John Chambers (Maraetotora). Of the kindliest disposition, & with a broad character. which overbore the fictious distinctions of creed & class, Major Chambers won the hearts of the community from the lowest to the highest, by his unaffected manners, & his manly bearing, which made him at home in all grades of society. Of course, he has only offered the sacrifice of his life for the cause of civilization in common with many others, but he & his family are so intimately known in Hawke's Bay, & their name is so generally familiar through NZ as being associated with public & social life, in the highest meaning of such association, that people, & especially Hastings people, feel his untimely death as a personal loss. The deceased soldier was educated at Heretaunga School, Nelson Boys' College & Lincoln Agricultural College &, as quite a young man, took a deep interest in military affairs, joining the Hawke's Bay Mounted Rifles as a Lieutenant. He subsequently attained a Captain's commission & he left Hastings for the seat of war with the rank of Major. He took an active part in all things of an agricultural & pastoral nature & he was provincial president of the Farmers' Union, resigning that position when he left for the front. A couple of months ago Mr & Mrs T. Mason Chambers lost another son, as the result of illness. A few years ago Selwyn Chambers married Miss Hall of Blenheim & with her & his infant son profound sympathy is expressedPublic - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 14 October 2026 - DEATH OF MAJOR SELWYN CHAMBERS. - Daily Telegraph (Napier), Issue 20047, 12 August 1915, Page 5 - Memorial name
