Biographical information
- Son of Mr & Mrs G. Hewitt, Waimana, New Zealand
Attended Gisborne High School and Bower's Engineering School, Auckland.
Awarded Flying Badge 5 May 1941.
Moved toward end of 1941 with his squadron to Burma from where he saw action against the Japanese.
A family informant writes: ' After the war ended, my grandparents had a visit from a fellow Airman who was in the air with Ted that day. He felt they should know that he had seen Ted attacked by a Japanese fighter. Ted bailed out as the plane went down; the Japanese plane returned and shot him as he parachuted down. This was not easy for them [grandparents] to know, nor for the fellow to tell them but he felt they would want to be aware, rather than always wonder what had happened to him. It seems strange that this was not reported in [official] records!'
Official sources say 'On 25 December 1941 Sergeant Hewitt was pilot of a Buffalo fighter which took off from Mingaladon, Burma, to engage approaching enemy aircraft, and in the ensuing aerial combat Sergeant Hewitt was killed.'
Attended Gisborne High School (Source: RNZAF Biographies (R17845611)) AWMM
