Applications are now open for the Sir Hugh Kawharu Scholarship, offered by the Kawharu Foundation in partnership with Auckland Museum. The $10,000 grant is open to students of Māori descent who are studying full-time at undergraduate or graduate level at a New Zealand university or wānanga and have an interest in cultural heritage.

On Thursday 7 April 2022 Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum will unveil the new exhibition Nature Boy: The Photography of Olaf Petersen. This is the first-ever exhibition dedicated solely to the work of Olaf Petersen, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most talented and understated nature photographers of the 20th century.

From Monday 8 January, Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium comes to Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum for the summer school holidays. Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium is an immersive theatre experience that allows visitors to get up-close and personal with an amazing array of aquatic creatures from bygone eras, connecting young audiences to the real science of palaeontology.

In 2021, Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum completed a series of major transformations to its visitor experience. The revitalised Te Ao Mārama South Atirum has revealed the most significant changes to the Museum in more than a decade, and has been recognised by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) at its annual New Zealand Architecture Awards, winning nationally in three categories.

On Thursday 18 November 2001 Kaumātua of Ngāti Kuri journeyed across the ocean back to their home islands of Rangitāhua to honour their ongoing history of return voyaging and recognise their occupation. It is no coincidence that ‘Expedition Rangatahi’ voyages from Aotearoa to Rangitāhua (The Kermadec Islands) are happening 20 years to the day.

On Thursday 3 December 2021 Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum reopened its South Atrium entrance – Te Ao Mārama – to reveal the most significant changes to the Museum in more than a decade. One such change was Kahu Tāmaki, a wardrobe project that aimed to revamp the Museums’ front-of-house Visitor Host uniforms to allow them to feel more connected to their workplace.

Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum has been advised by the Auckland Police that a mass demonstration is planned for Saturday 20 November in Auckland Domain. As a result, the Museum will not open or be open to the public on Saturday.

Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum has today confirmed that it will require all staff, volunteers and visitors to be fully vaccinated as a condition of being able to attend the Museum’s destination building on the Auckland Domain. The vaccination certificate requirement will become effective as soon as practicable when Auckland moves into the new Covid Protection Framework (“traffic light system”).

The Government on Monday 1 November made an in-principle decision that Auckland could potentially open under Alert Level 3, Step 2 on Wednesday 10 November. Under Level 3, Step 2 the Government has indicated that Museums can open if they can meet the health and safety requirements. Should the Government confirm this decision on Monday 8 November, Tāmaki Paenga Hira will open its doors to the public on Monday 15 November.
