Kōrero taurongo
- James Herbert Golding Alp was born at Gillingham, Kent, on 11 February 1911 (also recorded as 7 February 1911). He arrived in New Zealand with his family on the RMS Remuera on 27 February 1923, settling in Whanganui. Alp joined the Army Cadets, later served in the Territorials, and enlisted for active service at Trentham Camp on 1 February 1940. He embarked for Egypt in February 1941 and completed signals training, serving with New Zealand Divisional Signals as part of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
On 15 July 1942 Alp was captured in North Africa and later confirmed as a prisoner of war. He was held in camps in Italy before being transferred by train through Germany, including periods at Stalag IVB and Offlag VIIIF, and was eventually interned at Oflag 79 near Brunswick. During captivity he was promoted to the rank of Captain. He remained a prisoner of war until the camp was liberated on 12 April 1945. He travelled to the United Kingdom, arriving in Margate later that month, and returned to New Zealand in September 1945. He was discharged from the Army in 1946. While a prisoner of war, Alp produced watercolours and drawings documenting daily life in camps in Italy and Germany, including Campo 47 at Modena. Created with scarce materials, these works provide rare visual records of captivity.
After the war, he returned to Whanganui, married Grace Elizabeth Smailes in 1946, and they raised four children. He later became Custodian of the Sarjeant Gallery. He died on 14 October 1989 and is buried at Aramoho Cemetery, Whanganui.
Alp's daughter donated sketches drawn during captivity to the Te Whare O Rehua Sarjeant Gallery Whanganui in 2020. AWMM

- Note: JHG Alp was healthy and fit and didn't see a doctor after his NZDF discharge until 1980. His parent lived into their late 90s. Perhaps the hard life he endured at POW led to his untimely/early death?Public - Barbara - Child - 26 January 2020 - Family
