Victoria Cross - 'For most conspicuous bavery at Lone Pine trenches, in the Gallipoli Peninsula. On the moning of the 9th August, 1915, with a very small party, Captain Shout charged down trenches strongly occupied by the enemy, and personally threw four bombs among them, killing eight and routing the remainder. In the afternolon of the same day, from the position gained in the morning he captured a further length of trench under similar conditions, and continued personally to bomb the enemy at close range under very heavy fire, until he was severely wounded, losing his right hand and left eye. This most gallant officer has since succumbed to his injuries.' - 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 28- 24/02/1916 AWMM - Military Cross (MC) AWMM

Alfred J. Shout was the eldest of nine children and the only son of John Richard and Agnes Mary Shout (nee Kelly).
Shout went to South Africa where he served with Captain MacDonald's Squadron Cape Colonial Forces and the Border Horse. He was Mentioned in Despatches (Army Orders dated 23 February 1901 at Pretoria) and made Queen's sergeant.
He was made Sergeant in 1903 and served with the Cape Field Artillery. He married Rose Alice and they had one daughter, Florence Agnes Maud Shout, who was born in Cape Town on 11 June 1905.
Shout moved to Sydney, Australia, with his wife and daughter in 1905 and worked as a carpenter and joiner.
Shout joined the 29 Infantry Regiment of Australia in 1907 and was commissioned on 16 June 1914. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 28 August 1914 and was appointed to that battalion as a Second Lieutenant.
Shout embarked with his unit on the 'S.S. Afric' for Egypt. He was promoted to lieutenant on February 1915.
Shout's battalion arrived in Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He took part in the original landing in Gaba Tepe, and was wounded on the first day. Throughout his time in Gallipoli Shout exhibited outstanding bravery and leadership. He was awarded the Military Cross, Mentioned in Despatches, promoted to Captain and finally awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery in trench fighting at Lone Pine in August 1915.
