"During the attack on 2 August 1944 on Villa Da Baberina 2/Lt. Lambly's platoon was ordered to advance and secure the right flank of the company. This he did with skill and determination. During the advance his platoon was subjected to heavy mortar and shell fire resulting in his being seriously wounded. When ordered by his Company Commander to report to the Regimental Aid Post he refused, and although suffering intense pain, continued to lead the attack, displaying courage and leadership of the highest order. This officer was himself first on the objective, personally annihilating one anti tank gun. After reporting success he lost consciousness. 2/Lt. Lambly's grim determination and gallantry was instrumental in enabling the rest of his company in securing their objective. At all times he showed devotion to duty of the highest order. (London Gazette 10/5/1945 (I)) The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Lambly, Percy Overton. (Ref. WO 373/11/595). Military Cross. " AWMM - War Medal 1939-1945 AWMM

- Second Lieutenant Percy Overton ‘Nip’ Lambly, MC, was born in Mangonui and raised on his parents’ farm at Oruru, Northland. He was the son of P. W. Lambly and his wife and attended Oruru School. Before enlisting, he worked as a truck driver, later operating his own trucking business, and assisted on the family farm.
A keen sportsman, Lambly played rugby for Awanui, Kaitaia and Oruru, represented Mangonui County and North Auckland, and was selected for a North Island Minor Unions team. He also represented Mangonui in cricket, playing for the Mangonui and Peria clubs.
Lambly entered military service in 1940 and departed overseas as a sergeant in 1941. He subsequently gained a commission and served in the North African and Italian campaigns. Wounded at El Alamein, he spent five months in hospital. He was seriously wounded again in Italy and repatriated to New Zealand by hospital ship in November 1944. By May 1945, he was convalescing at his parents’ farm following treatment at Auckland Hospital's military annexe.
He was awarded the Military Cross for his overseas service. AWMM
