During the attack on Fonte Grande on 24 December 1943, Capt. Matehaere commanded the right flank company of the battalion and during the attack both his company and the company on the left flank were pinned to the ground by intense mortar and machine-gun fire. Completely disregarding his own personal safety Capt. Matehaere went forward and reconnoitred the position, located two enemy machine-gun posts and personally led the attack on these posts, both of which were silenced. Leading his men with determination and skill, Capt. Matehaere continued the advance, his leadership and vigorous handling of position resulting in his company securing his right flank of the battalion, knocking-out several more machine-gun posts and taking a number of prisoners. Throughout the operation Capt. Matehaere was a continual source of encouragement and inspiration to his men and himself contributed largely to the success of the operation as a whole.(London Gazette 20/7/1944 (I)) The National Archives.
