- Next of Kin: Mr W. Porter, Puha, Gisborne (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2)) AWMM
- Private John V Porter, of Puha, killed in action on June 4th, the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W Porter, settlers, Puha. He left with the Third Reinforcements, landing in Egypt. From there he was transferred the Dardanelles, and got wounded during that terrible time. He was invalided back home to New Zealand by the first hospital ship, made a good recovery, and left again with the 19th Reinforcements, landing in England. After some time on Salisbury Plains he was sent to France, and had been in the trenches since the 8th of March. He was 25 years of age, and his parents received letters from him about a week agoPublic - Lorraine M - Researcher - 22 September 2015 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLIV, Issue 14332, 23 June 1917, Page 3
