Kōrero taurongo
- Harold Renwick was the son of Joseph and Ellen Renwick, of Kennedy St., Mangapapa, Gisborne, New Zealand.
Next of Kin: Mr J. Renwick, Gisborne (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2)) AWMM - News was received last night of the death from wounds of Sergt. Harold Renwick, son of Mr Joseph Renwick, of Mangapapa. Sergt. Renwick, who was a member of the Herald bookbinding staff, enlisted at the age of 19 and left Gisborne with the 3rd Reinforcements in December, 1914. His contingent joined the Main Body in Egypt, and Harold Renwick proceeded with the forces sent to Gallipoli and took part in the Historic landing. He served throughout the arduous Gallipoli campaign till the evacuation, and was then sent to France, where, with the experience he had gained in machine gun work on the peninsula, he was attached to the machine gun section with the Ist Battalion of Wellington Infantry and was promoted to the rank of sergeant. With the exception of three weeks, during which he was incapacitated at Gallipoli owing to a scald, and eight days furlough in England, he had two and a half years' continuous service. His bright and cheery manner made him extremely popular amongst his comrades and his conduct won the esteem and confidence of his officers. He participated in the Messines battle, and it must have been in one of the subsequent counter-attacks that he was wounded on June 25, his death occurring on the 18th inst. The late Sgt. Renwick belonged to a good fighting family, his father being, an old Imperial soldier who served in Egypt with Kitchener, and who having again heard the call ol Empire recently volunteered for service and is now attached to the headquarters staff at Trentham; whilst a brother, Sergt. J. Renwick, also went with Harold and returned invalided, but has again, volunteered and expects to leave for the front next month. Harold Renwick was held in high esteem by the members of the Herald staff, with whom he worked prior to the war, and deep sympathy is extended to his parents and relatives. His death makes the third member of the staff who has made the supreme sacrifice, the names being Cecil Ellery, Harold Muir, and Harold Renwick.Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 1 February 2016 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLIV, Issue 14361, 28 July 1917, Page 3
