Died of self-inflicted bullet wound, 14 February 1932. AWMM - Frederick Rundle was the son of John (a blacksmith) and Christiana Rundle, of Longstone, Helland, Bodmin, Cornwall, UK. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1913, living at Grassmere, Feilding with his sister, Mildred. He worked as a blacksmith for Lankshear of Colyton before enlisting in January 1915. He had tried to enlist in the Army in previous years, but was refused on the grounds of a speech impediment. Shortly after his training in Egypt, he joined 'B' Coy, 4th reinforcements, Wellington Battalion, and was sent to the Dardenelles, where he was wounded on the 9th June 1915. He returned to Anzac Cove, but was admitted to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station with ‘Nervous Exhaustion’ on the 11th July. One week later, on the 18th July, he disembarked at Malta and was immediately hospitalised with Enteric (Typhoid) fever. He was admitted to the military hospital at Mtarfa with Enteric fever with lesions. Moved to the 1st London General Hospital at St Gabriel’s College, Camberwell in September 1915. On the 11th January 1916 he was moved to Grey Towers Convalescent Hospital. Moved to Addington Park war hospital May 1916, and taken back to the NZ Conv Camp at Grey Towers in July. By August 1916 he moved to the depot at Codford, and in October 1916 he returned to the reserve group at the infantry training units at Sling Camp.
In October of 1916 he rejoined his battalion in France. On the 11th November 1916, while serving on the western front Frederick was wounded in action, suffering multiple gunshot wounds and a fractured skull. He was taken by New Zealand Field Ambulance to the 1st Casualty clearing station, before being taken to No. 7 General Hospital (known as Malassises Hospital) in St Omer, on the 13th November. Frederick was admitted to the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station on the 21st November. The Otago Daily Times states that he is ‘Dangerously ill’.
Taken to King George hospital in London on the 15th January 1917. He died of his wounds 10 days later, on the 25th January 1917, and was buried in the village where he was born, St Mabyn, in Cornwall, UK.Public - Sophie - Researcher - 19 July 2020 - Military Personnel files (found on this website).
