Kōrero taurongo
- Son of Charles Rowe, Lower Matakana, Auckland.
William Rowe is commemorated on the Matakana District war memorial. The inscription reads: 'This monument was erected by public subscription as a thanksgiving to almighty God for peace and victory and in memory of the men of this district who fell in the Great War 1914-1918. Their Duty Nobly Done. December 1919'
William is recorded on the Matakana War Memorial as W.R. Rowe. William Rowe is possibly a brother of Henry John Rowe (12/2559) AWMM - ==============================================================================
William was born 22nd December 1892 on the family farm Dreyerton (aka Kapuapunga), Hastwell, Manawatu, just south of Eketahuna. In 1911 his parents purchased a farm in Matakana, North Auckland, NZ and they lived there until 1920.
At the age of 25, William enlisted with the Wellington Infantry Regiment – 11th (Taranaki) Company. Arriving on the battlefields of France September 1917, losing his life a few weeks later on 4th October 1917 at the Battle of Broodseinde (Passchendaele).
During this battle New Zealanders performed with distinction and the battalion histories are littered with accounts of individual heroism and astonishing perseverance in the face of enemy fire.
William Charles Rowe was recorded as “Missing in Action” and his body has never been recovered. He is remembered at the Tyne Cot Memorial, located outside of Passchendaele, near Zonnebeke in Belgium.
William's younger brother Sergaent Henry John Rowe also listed on the Matakana War Memorial lost his life at the Battle of Messines Ridge - 7 June 1917.
Both of these boys still lie on those battlefields their graves known only unto God
