Son of Benjamin Tangihia Savage and Mere Te Arani Kuku Rewiti. One of four brothers of Hikuai, Thames who served in World War I: Samuel (Haami) Savage; Valentine (Taina) Savage; Charles (Tiari) Savage and Tom (Tamahou) Savage.
"Five brothers of a well-known Thames family have established a good record as a fighting family. Trooper Valentine Le Savage, who en. listed in an early reinforcement jraft, was invalided home some time ago. Lieutenant Charles Savage, of the Second Maori contingent, was the next to go to the front. Sergeant-Major Samuel Savage, who enlisted in Australia, was killed at Gallipoli. Corporal Thomas Savage, who was a member of the Main New Zealand Body, was wounded at Gallipoli, came back to New Zealand, and has since enlisted again, and is now in France. The fifth soldier from the family is Private Ben Savage, who enlisted recently." LOCAL AND GENERAL. - LOCAL HEROES - Sergt. Charles Savage, who was reported killed in action in France, was the sixth son of the late Mr B. Savage, of Hikuai, and a brother to Mrs T Watene, of Kopu. He enlisted in Auckland with the 6th Reinforcements, being a member of the Hauraki Territorials. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant and was transferred to and left with the 2nd Maori Contingent. He has been at the fiont over two years, and has seen much fighting in France. The late sergeant was one of four brothers to offer their services to their country. Two of them, returned. Private Valentine, who left with the 5th Reinforcements, was invalided, and Lance Corporal Tom, who left with the Ist Maori Contingent, was wounded at Gallipoli. The latter has returned again to the front. The other brother, Sam, enlisted with the First Australians, and was through the whole Gallipoli campaign. He was wounded twice in France. Sergt. Charles Savage's !ast home letter was written from Belgium, on Ist April, to his sister, Mrs T. Waitene. He stated that he had had many narrow "squeaks," but so far had come out all right, also expressing the wish that the war was over, so that he cou'd soon return to dear old New Zealand.Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 8 February 2016 - Thames Star, Volume LVIII, Issue 18387, 7 July 1917, Page
- A good record as a fighting Family is that of the Savage family, of Tairua, Thames. Sergeant Charles Savage, who was killed in action in France on June 21, at the age of 24, took part in the battle of the Somme. Prior to going to the front, he was drill instructor at the Narrow Neck Camp. While in Egypt he attended the school of instruction, and passed his examination. His brother Samuel enlisted in Australia, and has been twice wounded. Another brother, Thomas, after being wounded at the landing at Gallipoli, returned to New Zealand. He afterwards again enlisted, and is still at the front. Yet another brother, Valentine, who also was at the Gallipoli landing, was invalid home.Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 8 February 2016 - New Zealand Herald, Volume LIV, Issue 16512, 16 July 1917, Page 6
