- Frederick Stuckey was the son of Mrs F.A. Bamford (formerly Stuckey) of Nelson.
He was a Master at King's College, Auckland, from 1898-1914.
Waite's description of the area is as follows: Inland from Suvla Bay was the tangled mass of cliffs, valleys and hills culminating in the peak of the Sari Bair system, which, from its height marked in feet, was afterwards known as 'Hill 971'. Lying further over near the Straits and protecting the fortress on the European side, was the mountain system known as the 'Pasha Dagh' or Kilid Bahr Plateau. On the day of the landing the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was ordered to force a landing on the beach between Gaba Tepe and Fishermen's Hut.Hill 971 itself was to be avoided, the troops endeavouring to pass over its sourthern under-features to the road running from Boghali and Maidos. Mal Tepe was a hill specifically mentioned.According to operation orders: "The capture of this position would threaten and perhaps cut the line of retreat of the enemy's troops on Kilid Bahr plateau, and have far-reaching results". Waiting on board the Lutzow the troops prepared to be taken ashore in tows. As a member of the Auckland Regiment (16 Waikato) Philson was amongst the first New Zealanders to land.Once away from the shelter of the ship they came under immediate fire. The Colonel leapt into the water, waist deep, and led the way.The men followed across the pebbly beach and the little strip of level ground to the shelter of the hill, and there formed up.Packs were thrown off, and then orders came to move round to the left and reinforce the Australians, who were being hard pushed on top of the great cliff they had won.The Battalion had crossed the spur running down to Ari-Burnu point, and the 3rd Company, crossing Mule Gully, was about to climb the steep hill-side when fresh orders arrived. It was now the centre which showed signs of breaking, and where help was most urgently needed. The 16 Waikatos lead the way.The new route lay over the Plateau, and it was here tanks started to get busy.Once above the crest-line, across the level, and descending the slope towards Shrapnel Valley men commenced to fall. The rough ground, thick growth of stunted ilex, the enemy fire, were all disorganising the line. The natural impetuosity of some, the physical strength of others, carried them on ahead. Shrapnel Valley was the main line of direction along which the advance had taken place. It is one of the most famous of all the Gallipoli names. In few of the highways of war have so many died as in this terrible one. Refer to F. White's The New Zealanders at Gallipoli from which the above account is taken. The ship "Waimana" left Auckland but joined the Main Body convoy in Wellington before leaving New Zealand on the 16/10/1914.

Auckland Infantry Battalion; 6 Hauraki Coy; Serial no. 12/2
Died of wounds Sun Apr 25 1915, age 36
DOW 25.4.15 during the Battle of the Landing at the Nek, aged 36 yrs; Lieut.-Col. Plugge stated: “The last I saw of him he was gallantly leading his company up a ridge that ran to the left of Shrapnel Gully, and later in the day it was reported that he had been severely wounded (through the stomach, and if I remember correctly, through the chest), and that his men were unable to bring him back. … missing and severely wounded, believed killed. … Several of the Hauraki men told me they had seen the Major put on board a lighter on the Anzac Beach, and I am quite prepared to believe this. It is more than probable that he died before reaching the hospital, and was taken away in a minesweeper and buried at sea, without his named being noted in the fearful rush of wounded which came from shore the first day or two”; An inquiry was made by a friend to Col. AB Charters, officer commanding the NZ base camp in Egypt, who replied: “Major Stuckey reported wounded but no trace in hospitals Egypt, Malta, England and can get absolutely no other information from front or elsewhere.” At the time Stuckey was not reported “missing”. His mother was officially informed that Stuckey was “progressing favourably”; HQ thought Stuckey possibly was held prisoner by Turks; A Court of Inquiry during 9.1915 concluded Stuckey was killed shortly after the landing; Struck off strength 25.9.15; Born Christchurch 8.4.77; Attended Nelson College (champion gymnast and swimmer) and Auckland University; Teacher and Assistant Master, King’s College, Remuera, Auckland 1898-1914, interrupted by period of teaching in France and Germany 1904-07; Single; NOK M: Mrs Fanny A Bamford (formerly Stuckey), Tahunanui, Nelson (married to Frederick Adolphus Bamford); F: the late Samual Stuckey, Christchurch; NKG; Lone Pine Mem.
