Kōrero taurongo
- Son of Peter Whyte, of Taupiri, New Zealand.
"Whyte was posted to France and based at the New Zealand training camp at Etaples. He eventually joined the Pioneer Battalion on 25 May in preparation for the successful attack on Messines on 7 June." (Church, p.171)
He stayed with the Pioneer Battalion, building dugouts, gun pits and shelters and eventually settled in the Ypres area prior to the third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) in October 1917. (Church, p.171)
In July 1918 Whyte became ill with inflammation of the peritoneum (peritonitis). He was transferred to 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst where he arrived on 19 July. He died there two months later. (Church, p.171)

- iN MEMORIAM.
WHYTE.—In loving memory of my dear brother, Walter, killed in action, somewhere in France on the 12th October, 1917.
Farewell, dear New Zealand,
Land of my birth, farewell
I fought the fight beneath
The, brave red, white, and blue.
Now to God above,
My spirit wings in prayer;
Farewell, my own dear land,
Tis peace for ever there.
- Inserted by his. loving sister and brother-in-law,
E. and G. Everitt, Kilbirnie.
WHYTE.—In loving memory of Cpl. Walter Whyte, killed in action somewhere in France, 12th October, 1917.
When days are dark and friends are few,
Dear Watty, here we long for you:
Friends are friends when they are true,
But, oh, those friends are very few.
