Kōrero taurongo
- James Williams (Moka) was the son of Wi Moka and Ellen Wi Moka, of Mangamuka, Hokianga
Two brothers went to war both enlisting as Williams: James Moka (19779) and Willie Moka (20624). Both died in the same month.
Enlisting as Williams, James joined the Maori (Pioneer) Battalion on 10 April at Bertrancourt, southwest of Hebuterne. While in the Front line, between Rossignol Wood and Hebuterne, he fell ill with debility and anaemia. His condition deteriorated and he was evacuated to England arriving at No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst on 6 August. Diagnosed with tuberculosis he remained dangerously ill and died weeks later. (Church, p.219).
Enlisted as James Williams, he named his father as William Moka. Listed, with his brother, with the name Moka on the Kohukohu School War Memorial and also the Hokianga Arch of Remembrance
Next of Kin: Mr W.
