New Zealand – Wind speed and direction finding exercise
3 service Flying Training School (ATS) RNZAF (Ohakea)
Oxford II NZ1237 – took off shortly after 1500 and failed to return. Despite an intensive aerial search no trace of the aircraft or it occupants could be found. Nearly four months later, during the first week of May, the wreckage and crew remains were stumbled upon at Mitre Peak in the Tararua Rages, 13 miles WSW of Otaki by a Mr M Trass. The Oxford had apparently become lost while flying in cloud an at 1550 struck the mountain slope. The bodies were buried at the scene, both airmen being commemorated on the Provincial Memorial at Auckland.
Also killed was NZ414963 LAC James Edgar Norman Corin, aged 29.
