- John died 1.30am on the 12th August. This occurred as Lancaster W4109 was en route to Mainz passing over Oberlahnstein by the Rhine river, Germany. This was unfortunate as John volunteered to fill in for a sick airman. Johns plane was hit by unidentified AA Flak, exploded violently in mid-air and disintegrated.
“I am not sure what happened on this night in 1942. There were no German fighters in the area, so I think Lancaster W 4109 got an Anti-Aircraft shell, direct hit in the bomb bay. The aircraft exploded in the air over the northern part of Rhens, Oberlahnstein, Germany. Oberlahnstein rail marshalling yard which was protected by heavy anti-aircraft artillery (88 mm). I have a search Permit (metal detector) and found a lot of small pieces in front of Oberlahnstein. All these belonged to a Lancaster. No other aircraft crashed in the area during WW II. Reason for the concentration of Flak, was the important rail marshalling yard at Oberlahnstein.”
Report from Richard Schneck German Historian who lives in Rhens, Germany and working on the regional history (hobby) in consultation with the GDKE (authority, archaelogists, Dr. Peter Henrich and Dr. M. Mohr).
An explosion caused by bomb load exploding would have been spectacular and very destructive to aircraft and crew members. The debris from this destruction is spread over a large area. Parts were found at Lahnstein 4kms North of Rhens and Waldesch 6kms West of Rhens.Public - Robert - Other relative - 16 January 2019 - Richard Schneck German Historian, Rhens, Germany - John died 1.30am on the 12th August.
