- "Mr David Brown, of Coquet street, received information from the Minister of Defence on Saturday morning that his son, Sergeant James Douglas Brown, had been killed in action in France on the 11th April. Sergeant Brown was born in Oamaru, and was twenty-nine years of age. He received his primary education at the Oamaru South School, and afterwards became a pupil of the Waitaki Boys' High School. He entered the Survey Branch of the Public Works Department, and was so engaged in the Auckland district when he enlisted. He went with the Main Body as a private in the Auckland Infantry Battalion, and received promotion to non-commissioned rank in the field. After passing through the Gallipoli campaign, including the memorable landing, he went with the New Zealand Force to France. There he saw a lot of service without receiving a hurt until January last, when he was wounded and was sent to England. Making a quick recovery, he returned, to the front, where he had not long been again engaged in the fighting when he met his death. "Dug," as he was familiarly known, took an active interest in sports, and was well known in football and rowing circles."
