- Malcolm Barriball was the son of Samuel Eber Barriball and Florence Susan Barriball, of Waiuku, Auckland.
Pilot Officer Malcolm Barriball studied at Canterbury Agricultural College after leaving King's College. He was a pupil at King's (School House) from 1936-1937. He enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force and served in the United Kingdom. He failed to return from a squadron operation over Europe.

"Squadrons numbered in the 400 series were technically units of the RCAF, RAAF and RNZAF, but their members were placed under the operational control of the RAF and are usually considered to be part of the RAF's organisational structure".
