Transcript of Letter: " From Egypt, 12th Batt. Otago M R Base Squad
Address Reply No 3 Troop 6/5/15 "Dear Mother
I suppose you are wondering why (I) have not written. I have not been getting any letters until(sic) this mail when I got Nellie's. Did you get the two small parcels that I sent they cost me three & seven shillings. Things are not so cheap here as one would think. Jo wrote to me and asked me to get her some beads might just as well ask for the moon, a bob a day does not go very far though if I had ten it would be just the same. I was in hospital last week with sand Cholic (sic) the doctors thought it was appendix so they put me on milk and soda for four days when they found out I was allright (sic). The menu for the day is allways (sic) the same, breakfast bad stew & flies, lunch bread and butter, with jam & flies, dinner, bad meat , with spuds with sand & flies chucked in to flavour it. Oh it's allright (sic). We can get eggs and tomatoes here fairly cheap. I expect you have heard more about the attack on the Dardenelles than we have it was a hot fight, they landed under a heavy fire and imedeatley(sic) fixed bayonets & charged. there was awfull (sic) slaughter but they won through, as they had orders not to allow themselves to be captured. All the wounded have arrived back in Egypt. The seriously wounded to Alexandria & the others to here, up to yesterday there was about five hundred names on the list of wounded. The Wellington, Auckland & Canterbury Mounteds are going to the front on Saturday as Infantry, except those left behind to look after the horses. George Guy? is not going. Bob Killminster has been sent back on account of his heart going wrong. The Otago Mtds will keep their horses as they are attached to headquarters & the Army Service Cop. to act as escort we will see some hot fighting when we do get to Turkey. I bet we pull out some of the tail feathers they don't like the cold steel. I forgot to mention that all the third Reinforcement Infantry left here a fortnight ago. I expect they were in the first fight. It is getting very hot now, we were issued with helmets yesterday & they are allright. there is never any rain here. well can't think of any more news now. How are you all keeping. I hope you are allright (sic). Tell Roy he will have to buck up and get well so that he can get to the front. its good fun. Remember one to the Muirs and the rest. I can't write too many letters. Must close now with the best love to all from
Your loving Son
George Bradey
PS I expect by the time you get this I will be at the front.
How much was the allotment money.
The Roy mentioned in the letter was his younger brother. He did not take his brother's advice and go to war. AWMM
