- Daughter of Horatio N. and Eliza M. Le Gallais, of Tauhoa, North Auckland. Married Charles Fisher Gardner (1877–1955) in 1918 New Zealand brick manufacturer and local politician.
Three children served in WW1 Leddra (12/2171) kia, Owen (6/3230) and Charlotte (Lottie) (22/137)
Charlotte Le Gallais ("Lottie") nursed at Auckland Hospital and was one of ten nurses selected for the first voyage of the New Zealand Hospital Ship 'Maheno', in July 1915. Charlotte's brother Leddra ("Leddie") was already at Gallipoli when she embarked. He was killed in action on 23 July 1915.
AWMM Auckland War Memorial Museum 'Scars on the Heart' World War I: " Nurses and Volunteers" case. The following items are on display: photograph of Charlotte Le Gallais in uniform; two quotes; letter from Lottie to her brother Leddra, with enevelope postmarked Wellington, 10 July 1915; letter to Lottie from her brother Leddra dated 14 April 1915; calling card "Sister L. Le Gallais, NZMC, NZ Hospital Ship, Maheno"; paybook Le Gallais for duties on HS Maheno; medals; book and small new testament.
Charlotte “Lottie” Le Gallais (22/137) was born on 24 October 1881 in Clevedon, Auckland, and began nursing at Auckland Hospital in 1909. In July 1915 she was selected for the first voyage of the New Zealand hospital ship Maheno, caring for wounded as the ship travelled between Gallipoli and Egypt. Aboard ship she received men straight from the beaches and undertook the grim work of “washing and cleaning” wounds few at home could comprehend.
Two of her brothers also served. Leddra “Leddie” Horatio Le Gallais (12/2171) was killed at Gallipoli on 23 July 1915, shortly before the Maheno reached the Mediterranean. Letters Lottie had written to him were returned marked “Reported killed-return to sender”, a blow delivered while she remained in active service. Another brother, Owen Horatio Le Gallais (6/3230), served on the Western Front and returned home. After four months aboard the Maheno, she returned to New Zealand in early 1916.
In early 1918 Charles Fisher Gardner, known as Sonny, was called up for Army service. They married before he entered camp, and Lottie went to Featherston, where she nursed during the devastating 1918 influenza pandemic, caring for her husband and many others who fell ill. After the war they returned to New Lynn and built their family home with Sonny becoming the first Mayor of New Lynn. They had two children, with Charles Le Gallais Gardner (425204) serving in World War II. During World War II she led the Medical Unit of Air Raid Precautions in New Lynn and remained active with Returned Army Nursing Sisters. She died on 26 January 1956, aged 75 (Profile written for “A Flight to Remember”, an Anzac Day 2026 initiative by Online Cenotaph and Air New Zealand). AWMM

- Mrs Charlotte Gardner
Within a few months of the death of her husband, the late Mr Charles Fisher Gardner, Mrs Charlotte “Lottie” (Le Gallais) Gardner passed peacefully at the family residence in Links Road, New Lynn, on 26 January, in her 76th year.
Born at Clevedon, Mrs Gardner devoted her life to the service of others. She began her nursing career in 1909 at Auckland Hospital, where she served as a Sister until the outbreak of the 1914–1918 war. She enlisted and went overseas as a Nursing Sister on the first voyage of the hospital ship Maheno, which operated between Gallipoli and Egypt.
Returning to New Zealand at the end of 1917, she married in 1918 and settled in New Lynn, where her work in support of others continued throughout her life. Mrs Gardner was a foundation member of the New Lynn Women’s Institute and of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. During World War II she was appointed in charge of the Medical Unit of the A.R.P. in New Lynn. In later years she remained active in the Returned Army Nursing Sisters (R.A.N.S.) and in the work of St Andrew’s Church.
A service was conducted by the Rev. W. Rutland Martin at the family residence in Links Road, after which the funeral proceeded to Waikumete Crematorium.
She is survived by a son, Charles Gardner (Junior), of Kamo, North Auckland; a daughter, Mrs T. J. Taylor, of New Lynn; and three grandchildren.
