Kōrero taurongo
- Ian Lewis Ruxton Wilson was the second son of Warwick St George Ruxton and Merthyr-Tydvil Winfred Wilson (nee Lewis) of Remuera Road, Auckland and one of three brothers who served in the forces.
Ian was educated at Kings College Auckland where he was a member of Town House, 1934-35. This was followed by Auckland University College where he was enrolled in a law course.
Ian served on aircraft and air carriers and was present at the Allied Landing at Salerno.
The New Zealand Herald of 12 May 1944 reported Ian Wilson as missing
A poem was written by R.A. Ringer in memory of his friends Dick Goodfellow and Ian Wilson both of whom were killed in action. Dick and Ian. Do you remember Warlingham?
My grandparents lived at Warlingham.
Do you remember, Dick, the Green?
Ian, do you remember the flint stone church?
I do, and I can tell my children of Warlingham,
I remember the church well, my grandparents' grave.
I have walked across the Green many times,
Yes, I have walked across the Green,
In memory, a thousand times.
We were young then, Dick and Ian,
We were so young, three boys then,
Mere boys, so very young,
Beneath the seas, no known graves.
Dick, I can never say good bye.
Ian, I will never shake your hand.
This long while, I remember you.
An album/scrapbook in possession of Mr R.A. Ringer contains material relating to Ian Wilson as they left New Zealand on the NZSS Rimutaka and trained together at HMS St Vincent, Portsmouth AWMM
