Kōrero taurongo
- Married Anna Plimmer 1937. Father of Don, Ian, Kate and John
Educated at Otago Boy's High School, gained a science degree at Otago University.
He attended gunnery and radar courses in the United Kingdom between 1938 and 1940 and served with 2NZEF in the Pacific. Played a part in organising the anti-aircraft defence of New Zealand. He also took part in the Italian campaign and spent time in Japan with Jayforce.
Appointed Chief General Staff from 1965-1967 where he persuaded the New Zealand government to send an artillery battery to Vietnam.
These extracts are taken from an eulogy written by Sir Terry McLean and published in the Sunday Star Times 31 May 1998. "After service in the Pacific zone and Italy during World War 2, Walter McKinnon was appointed Chief Administrative Officer of the Brigade Group to Japan as the initial Kiwi J Force. In Japan the 22nd was posted just down the road from Brigade HQ, while the other units were miles away. This meant that, by virtue of Colonel McKinnon's directives, we copped plenty. It also meant that on the day, after months of work, we opened a tennis court in a bombed-out hangar in Chofu, Col McKinnon demanded, and had to be given, first use of an amenity over which our blokes had sweated, toil, tears and blood."
His youngest son, John McKinnon, was appointed Secretary of Defence in 2006
Later Chief of General Staff. Also served under service number 804814. AWMM - Father of Don, Ian, Katherine, Malcolm & JohnPublic - Cam - Other Relative - 29 April 2015 - Family knowledge
