Citation for Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM): "On the night of 23-24 October 1942 during the attack on Miteiriya Ridge, Egypt, Lance Sergeant Marshall showed outstanding leadership in urging his platoon forward in the attack and keeping it close up to the artillery barrage. Although wounded, he took over command of the platoon when his commander was wounded and evacuated and by his courage and leadership brought his men safely through a minefield thick with mines, booby-traps and wire and covered with fire by enemy mortars and automatic weapons. He carried on until wounded a second time and throughout the engagement was an inspiration to those who served with him." (London Gazette, 16 January 1943) AWMM - 1939-1945 Star AWMM

Kōrero taurongo
- Francis Marshall was the son of William Marshall and Mary Marshall (nee Fitzgerald) of Orua Bay, Auckland. He embarked for the first time on 27 August 1940 with the Third Echelon. Having been wounded he returned to New Zealand on 13 July 1943. His second departure was on 12 January 1944 when he went overseas with the 11 Reinforcements.
The Ravenna War Cemetery is near the village of Piangipane in open flat countryside. Ravenna was taken by the Canadian Corps at the beginning of December 1944 and the burials in the cemetery reflect the fighting for the Senio line. British, Canadians, Australians, Indians and South Africans are buried there - 937 in all. Of these, 96 are New Zealanders. AWMM
