- During the Crete campaign, the Germans dropped paratroopers in Maleme airfield. On the second day, 12 Planeloads landed along the Platanias river and D Company had the job of disposing of them. A number of Germans landed on the plateau and 19 Army Troops Company was forced to withdraw after losing some men. Two Maori Bren-Gunners, Privates John Whare and Matiu Bailey climbed out of their covered pits and went for the parachutists. Both died standing.
