Kōrero taurongo
- Reginald Curtis was the son of Charles John and Edith Marion Curtis, of Hamilton.
Reginald Curtis gained his Proficiency in Neslon before going to Westport Technical High School, where he palyed football and cricket. From 1938 until his enlistment in 1941 he was employed on bridge building by the Public Works Department. Prior to his enlistment at Levin on 28 June 1941 he worked through the pre-entry course.
He embarked for Canada and trained at No 1 Wireless School in Montreal. He was then posted to No 1 Bombing and Gunners School, Jarvis, Ontario where he gained his Air Gunners badge and promotion to Sergeant on 2 April 1942. In June Sergeant Curtis returned to New Zealand and in July was posted to No 5 Bombing ..Squadron, Nausori, where he flew as Wireless Air Gunner in Vincents on convoys and anti submarine patrols. Sergeant Curtis did a course at Gisborne from February to May 1943 and was promoted Flight Sergeant on 1 May 1943.
On 17 June he was on a course at the United States Naval Airo Operational Training Unit, Jacksonville, Florida, flying Avengers. On his return on 30 March 1944 he joined 30 Squadron and was stationed at Piva. At the time of his promotion to Warrant Officer on 1 May 1944 he was flying as Wireless Operator Air Gunner with Flight Officer Bailey and was engaged chiefly on bombing strikes.
On 10 May 1944 Warrant Officer Curtis was in the crew of an Avenger which was hit by ack-ack fire and crashed into the sea near Creet Harbour off the Lakunai airstrip. All the crew were classified as missing, believed killed. The other members of the crew were Flying Officer A M Bailey (Pilot) and Sergeant L G Schlesinger.
