Arthur Vivian Carbines - 1879-1915
In August 1915, Mr R J Carbines of New Lynn received notification that his eldest son had been killed at Gallipoli. He had been mentioned in dispatches for attempting to rescue wounded men. The letter informed the recipient that the King had high appreciation for the sacrifice he had made.
In the “In Memoriam, Gallipoli August 1915” there were acknowledgements from his parents, brothers, sisters and friends. One included the words “Greater love hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friend. A true friend, a more loyal chum no man could wish to know. Inserted by his sorrowing and loving chum. Ern.”
Arthur was a talented musician and pianist who had been well known in musical circles. He was involved with The Orphans Club and Savage Club. He worked for J C Spedding and had recently been appointed their manager in New Plymouth. On the outbreak of war he enlisted with the Wellington Infantry Battalion.
Above biography was transcribed, researched and written by Margaret Nash of Panmure Branch of NZSG
