Citation for Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM): "On the morning of 29 November 1941, at Point 175, near Sidi Rezegh, Libya, Private Goad was company signaller of D Company. The enemy overran the position, practically surrounding Company Headquarters and killing the Company Commander. Observation was difficult for the forward observation officer but Private Goad observed and directed the artillery fire for more than an hour through the Battalion Headquarters Exschange, although under continuous enemy fire. On several occasions he appeared to be surrounded by the enemy but managed to hold on in his slit trench. His action materially assisted in stabilising the position." Kōrero taurongo
- The 'Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45 21 Battalion' by J.F. Cody states the following in regards to the actions of the Battalion in Libya in 1941:
"Private Graham Goad helped materially in repulsing the attack on D company. His post was surrounded and he could have surrendered without dishonour. At one stage he rang through and said there appeared to be no alternative but to surrender, but he hung on. When the attack fell away the machine-gun posts remained well forward and restricted all movement. The guns were being directed on to them, but some were in positions that could not be seen by the forward observation officer. Goad stood up whenever a shell was due to land, noted the fall and phoned directions through Battalion Headquaters direct to the battery until the machine guns were all knocked out. When the enemy finally withdrew there was only one tank left, and the English anti-tank guns were all silent, with their crews dead along side them." (p. 137)
