- FALL DOWN LIFT-WELL. YOUNG SOLDIERTS; DEATH, At the inquest on the, body of Gunner Henry George Chilton, a: young. member of the Expeditionary Force, 2£ years of age, who met his death by falling down the well of a 'lift in the Williamson Chambers, in Shortland street, Auckland, Frederick Taylor, caretaker of the Chambers, said that the deceased came to his residence for tea on the Saturday with his father, mother and- two sisters, arriving at 5.30 p.m. About 10 p.m. the deceased and witness r s son left the room to go down to the street and put a trap in out in the rain. They went:' in the direction of a lift and he followed them shortly afterwards. Just before he got to the corner of the passage he heard a sound as of somebody falling down the lift. If the door of the lift were four ( feet above •, the landing he could give no reason for it. He had inspected the lift since the accident, and there appeared to be nothing wrong with it. The deceased was well acquainted with the working of the' lift. It was reasonable to assume that if thelift were up .four feet from the landing, he might 'mistake the bottom of .the lift .for the top. The deceased had no intoxicating liquor while in his house, and showed no signs of having had any when he arrivedPublic - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 11 May 2023 - POVERTY BAY HERALD, VOLUME XLIII, ISSUE 13975, 25 APRIL 1916, PAGE 5
