In the renewed attack on Cassino on the night 19/20 March Capt. Ornberg took over from his company commander who had been wounded, and during the remained of the operation he displayed outstanding coolness and bravery. He personally led and encouraged his men in the attack, was always in the forefront of the battle and despite heavy machine-gun fire he pushed on and was instrumental in clearing out machine-gun and several snipers who had been taking a heavy toll of his men during the day. It was his own personal example and disregard of danger that so encouraged his men, and when the position was stabilised he visited all posts under heavy short range machine-gun fire. When the company on his left flank lost most of it's officers Capt. Ornberg took charge of the whole situation and co-ordinated the defences. His behaviour and bravery under fire were an inspiration to his men. (London Gazette 3/8/1944 (I)) The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Ornberg, Peter Frederick Te Heuheu. (Ref.
