Further notes from War Graves (New Zealand).
The remains of the late Cpl. John Wallace Geange Wellington Mounted Rifles, Main Expeditionary Force, and eldest son of Mr. J. Geange of Upper Hutt, were interred at St. John's, Trentham, with military honours yesterday afternoon. Deceased received seven wounds at Gallipoli. He recovered from six, but the seventh, which nearly severed his spine, caused paralysis of the lower portion of the body. He underwent treatment at various hospitals in England, and as he had made a partial recovery, he was sent back to New Zealand.
He was the New Zealander of whom it was cabled out that the King had specially honoured him by conversation and handshake on the occasion of the Anzac service at Westminster Abbey that he had been invited to tea, and entertained by the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace, being sent to both functions in a special conveyance.
He died at Rotorua on Friday last, after having been confined to his bed for nearly two years. The Bishop of Wellington and the Rev. A. D. Stratford, M.A., officiated at the graveside. The Trentham Band and a firing party were in attendance, together with the Upper Hutt platoon, D Company, 5th Regiment, Territorial’s, under Cpl. K. M'Curdy, Upper Hutt platoon D Company, No. 2 Regiment National Reserve, under Lieut' A. J. M'Curdy, and a large number of friends and relatives.
Deceased is the first of some 200 men from Upper Hutt who have gone to the front who has been, buried at his own township. Three others lie at Gallipoli and two in France. - (Original source not given - NZWGT)Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 26 June 2020 - Military File and Further Note from WarGraves (New Zealand).
