- Late Mr. Ngapaki Mete Kingi Was Commissioned In the Field
Mr. Ngapaki Mete Kingi, whose death occurred on Wednesday, was one of two members of the Maori Pioneer Battalion of World War 1, who was commissioned in the field. He was a grandson of the late General Mete Kingi Paetahi, M.H.R., progenitor of the Takarangi-Mete Kingi families, and was one of three brothers who served in World War 1. His father was Mr. Hoani Mete Kingi. elder brother of Mr. Takarangi Mete Kingi, of Putikl. When he was demobilised the late Mr. Ngapaki Mete Kingi joined the New Zealand Railway service, but later went into the market gardening business on his own account. He was one of the few successful Maori market gardeners. Ill health compelled him to give up that work. He became deeply interested in social welfare work among the Maoris and, in the days of the late Mr. M. J. Savage, joined the Labour movement. He was an organizer in the Western Maori electorate for Mr. Matiu Ratana at the last general election, and was one of those who helped frame the existing Maori Economic and Social Welfare Act, Not long ago he had been to Wellington in regard to social welfare matters and there was a prospect of him being appointed a welfare officer in the Wanganui district.
Mr. Mete Kingi was a keen sportsman. notably In tennis, and was a foundation member of the Putiki Tennis Club in 1904. He leaves a wife, two sons, and four daughters, three of whom are married.Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 7 December 2024 - Wanganui Chronicle, 27 February 1948, Page 4
