William Ormsby was a blacksmith from Otorohanga who enlisted at Avondale on 12 November 1914 and joined the New Zealand Māori Contingent. He served at Gallipoli and in the Balkans and later with the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion on the Western Front. Shell wounded in the left leg in September 1916, he was treated in hospitals in France and Britain and was invalided home. Ormsby was discharged on 2 April 1917 as no longer physically fit for war service due to illness contracted on active service. He later lived in the Waikato and died of pneumonia at Te Kuiti Hospital on 16 October 1929, and is buried at Puketotara Cemetery, Pirongia. AWMM

- The death has occurred, after an illness, of William Ormsby, youngest son of the late Robert Ormsby, Senr., who was well known in the King Country. The deceased was a brother of the late John Ormsby, who died some two years ago. The late Mr. W. Ormsby was formerly in business in Te Kuiti in partnership with the late Jeremiah Ormsby. He saw service in the war, and on his return here took up farming. He leaves a wife and two sons. A tangi will be held at Puketotara, near Pirongia, where the body is being taken, and where the family ancestral burying ground is situated.Public - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 19 June 2024 - KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE, VOLUME XXIII, ISSUE 3067, 17 OCTOBER 1929, PAGE 5
