Next of Kin: Miss B. Delaney, Te Karaka, Gisborne (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 1)) AWMM - Nov 1915 - Private R. Delaney is a Te Karaka boy. He accompanied the Third Reinforcements, and has returned home with spinal conCtission, being paralysed in the right arm and leg. Not with standing his injuries Private Delaney is very cheerful. He says they landed in Junr and he went right through the big engagement starting on August 6 without mishap. After a spell at their dugouts they went out again on August 21 for another charge. He was amongst the bomb-throwing party that preceded, and was creeping on the Turkish trenches when an 8-inch high explosive shell from Fort Chanak struck them. Eight men went up in the air, he States, Six were killed and two remained alive, Private Delaney being one of themPublic - Lorraine M - Researcher - 25 February 2016 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLII, Issue 13832, 4 November 1915, Page 4
