- WOUNDED AT THE SOMME.
Wanganui Herald, Volume L, Issue 15094, 14 December 1916, Page 3
LETTER FROM MAJOR RICE. Major Stanley Rice, who was in charge of the Otago Battalion and was wounded during “the big push" on the Somme in September, writes as follows to his brother (Mr H. Rice, of Gonville) under date 14th October:
“Just a line or two to advise you Fritz has been putting in some good machine-gun practice on me. I had struggled through three weeks of the big push and escaped casualties, but on 28th September I had command of the Otago troops in a big push and got slathered up. The first one I got soon after we got over the parapet—through the right forearm, it did not hurt much, so I did not stop to dress it. About 200 yards further on I got a second one through the upper part of my right leg. It also went clean through without breaking any bones, and did not stop me. The third shot struck my revolver, which was hanging in front of my stomach, smashing the revolver to pieces and scattering the pieces into my right arm and chest and one small piece going into the fleshy part of my stomach. My revolver undoubtedly saved my life, because if it had not been there the bullet would have ploughed through me from one side to the other, I was still able to go on, and was taking a good quiz at Fritz’s trench to enable me to send back a report when a bullet smashed my left leg half-way between ankle and knee, and I went down and took the count.
My other wounds must have been bleeding a good deal, because as soon as I got into a shell hole I think I must have swooned. Anyway, I laid out in that shell hole in the rain for seven hours before the stretcher bearers arrived; then after I was dressed I had to lay outside the aid post for another five hours under shrapnel-fire before carriers could be found to take me away. Then seven weary miles through narrow communication trenches to the ambulance, making it about 18 hours before I got to the field ambulance, where they cut my clothes off me and set my leg, also cleaning and plugging my other wounds. Then I was evacuated to the hospital I am in at present—the Duchess of Westminster’s Hospital, Le Torquay, Paris-Plage, and here I have been since 29th September. They operated on me again as soon as I got there, first submitting me to X Rays. I have been X Rayed three times. The fracture is a very bad one—a compound fracture. Of course, the wound complicates things a bit. My temperature has been very high, but is down now to a reasonable point. The sister who has charge of my case reckons I will be fit to evacuate to Blighty in a week’s time if I behave myself.
You will see by the casualty lists they did not spare the NZ. Troops. We did about three times as much as we were supposed to, and made no error about it. It is HELL, old man, with the lid off; but no better troops ever carried a rifle into action than our boys. The ‘Trents’, are just as good as any of us, and fought like veterans. I don’t know whether I shall be much good for active service after this. However, in any case, I can feel satisfied I have done a man’s work and I know myself. I was always a bit afraid I may not have been able to face the real thing, but I found myself absolutely under control and cooler when actually on the job than I anticipated. This confidence increased with each stunt, and, I think, perhaps, made me too cocksure in my last performance.
Major Rice, who held a commission in the Territorials prior to the outbreak of war, left Invercargill to take charge of the First Maori Reinforcements. He subsequently received promotion, and was transferred back to his old battalion.Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 14 October 2015 - Wanganui Herald, Volume L, Issue 15094, 14 December 1916, Page 3
