- Thomas Duncan MacGregor Stout was a surgeon who served with the New Zealand Medical Corps during both World War I and World War II. The son of Sir Robert Stout, he was born on 25 July 1885 and trained in medicine and surgery.
Stout's military service began in August 1914 with the force sent to occupy German Samoa. In 1915 he was appointed to No. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital and embarked from New Zealand aboard the hospital ship Marama. He subsequently transferred to the Moldavia. His World War I service included Egypt, Salonika and the Western Front, as well as medical duties in the United Kingdom. He rose to the rank of Major and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and Mentioned in Despatches. His World War I service ended with his discharge in February 1920. His existing Online Cenotaph information records his service with the New Zealand Medical Corps and association with Marama.
Stout returned to military service during World War II, aged 54. He embarked with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force in May 1940 and served as a senior medical officer in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy. From February 1941 he served as Consultant Surgeon to the 2nd NZEF and eventually held the rank of Colonel. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his wartime medical service and was again Mentioned in Despatches.
Following the war, Stout became Medical Editor of the War History Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. Drawing on his extensive experience as a military surgeon, he wrote several volumes of New Zealand's official medical history of World War II, including War Surgery and Medicine (1954), New Zealand Medical Services in Middle East and Italy (1956), and Medical Services in New Zealand and the Pacific (1958).
Outside his military and medical work, Stout was a member of the Wellington Philosophical Society. He died on 27 July 1979. AWMM
