"CAPTAIN J. A. WALLINGFORD.
D.S.O. Captain J. A. Wallingford, D.S.O., N.Z.S.C., was brought to New Zealand direct from the school of Hythe, England by the Government to act as instructor to the Territorial Forces. Captain Wallingford was six times the rifle champion of the British Empire, twice revolver champion, and four times was second in the revolver championship. He represented Britain in two international rifle matches, and was invariably tho highest individual scorer of all nations. In addition to these great successes he was twice the winner of the Prince of Wales'e £100 prize, one of the biggest shooting trophies in the world." CAPTAIN J. A. WALLINGFORD. Press, Volume LI, Issue 15296, 4 June 1915, Page 7 - incorrectly noted as having DSO he received an MC after service in Gallipoli.
"We have already heard of the prowess of Captain Wallingford, who was, and probably still is, the finest shot in the British army. The British army claims that 'he is tho greatest shot in tho world." Captain Wallingford, Otago Daily Times, Issue 16487, 13 September 1915, Page 3
