Kōrero taurongo
- "On 10 September, Grooby left for France, and three days later joined the 1 Battalion , Canterbury Regiment, 12 Company at Haplincourt Wood, southeast of the Bapaume. The next day, 14 September, the Battalion moved to huts to the west of Biefvillers, a peaceful area out of range of the enemy's bombing planes. Grooby was wounded in action on 5 November 1918 when he was involved in action in Mormal Forest, near Herbignies, east of Le Quesnoy. He received gunshot wounds to his head and a fractured skull. He was admitted to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 22 November and placed on the 'Dangerously Ill' list. He died on 9 January 1919." (Church, p.228)
Llewellyn Grooby's brother, Laurence Robert Grooby, Trooper, 58408, Canterbury Mounted Rifles, was also killed in action on 27 October 1918. He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Israel. Ref. BB. 42. (Church, p.228)
