Kōrero taurongo
- Son of George and Lizzie Harnett, of 8, High Street, Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand.
Private Francis Joseph Harnett's remains were found in April 1968, by the staff of the museum curator, Mr Louis Menu.
According to Patrick Colson-Olmedo, Museum Secretary of the Museum in Messines, Francis was the twin son of the Auckland Port Inspector for the Dept of Agriculture. Some time before the Great War, the family lived in Wellington briefly.
Both twins enlisted for overseas duty when they turned 21, but only Francis was accepted; his brother being rejected on health grounds.
Pte Harnett transferred to the Wellington Infantry Battalion to win earlier posting overseas. He arrived in England on 11 October 1916 and left for France on February 2 1916. He joined the battalion in the field on May 27, and was killed 12 days later.
His twin brother named his son after him.
