- One of the 50 Tūhoe soldiers who fought in WW1. Ngāti Tawhaki. aka Tom Matthews. Pvt. World War 1, 1914-1918, sn16/812, 3rd Māori Contingent, A Company, embarked 5-Feb-1916 for Suez, Egypt, discharged from service on account of illness contracted on active service in 1919. Labourer, next of kin - Ngawai Waana (aunt), Gisborne; b.04-Jul-1894 Ruatoki, aged 21 when he enlisted in 1915,dcd 26-Dec-1959 age 65Y Rotorua (Charles Timutimu Research Project).
Urewera Lands Consolidation Scheme (Report of Commissioners as to position of). Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, 1924 Session I, G-07."At a sitting of the Commission at Ruatoki in April last it was stated that a number of the Urewera Natives sold their lands prior to enlisting for the war; those who returned now find themselves landless, and they ask that the Crown give them land so that they may not be a burden on the members of their families." Matiu was listed as one of these men. AWMM
