Kōrero taurongo
- Stanley James Lugg was born on 1 November 1895 in Christchurch, Canterbury. He was the sixth child and third son of William and Annie Lugg, who had emigrated to Lyttelton, New Zealand from St Keverne, Cornwall, England in 1875.
Stanley grew up in the rural settlement of Springston, near Lincoln, Christchurch, where his father worked as a contractor with a team of horses. Stanley was skilled at horse-riding and was working as a shepherd at the time he enlisted for WW 1 on 15 December 1915, when he was just 20 years of age.
At first his unit was “C” Squadron 11th reinforcements, where he was promoted to Corporal on 1 February 1916. He was transferred to 2nd Reserve on 1 March 1916 and again transferred to the Cyclist Company on 5 April 1916. On 20 April he was once again transferred, this time to the 12th Mounted Rifles.
He embarked for passage from New Zealand in HMNZ Troopship 52, the S.S. Mokoia on 6 May 1916 and disembarked in Suez on 22 June 1916, where he was taken ‘on strength of the New Zealand Mounted Training Regiment at Tel-el-Kebir’. For unknown reasons, he reverted to the ranks on 25 June 1916.
On 30 July 1916 he was posted to the Mounted Rifles at Kantara and rejoined the Canterbury Mounted Rifles on detachment on 14 September 1916.
He was sent to the School of Instruction in the Field on 24 November 1916 and rejoined his unit on 17 December 1916.
His medical records show the following:
On 14 January 1917 he was admitted to the New Zealand Mounted Field Ambulance at Masaid, with septic sores on his feet, and discharged to duty on 18 January 1917.
He was admitted with Synovitis knee in the Field on 9 February 1917 and discharged to duty on 13 February 1917.
He was admitted to hospital at El Arish with sore eyes on 20 May 1917.
He was admitted to 24th Stationary Hospital at Kantara on 22 May 1817.(no reason given)
Admitted to Citadel (“not yet dead”) at Cairo on23 May 1917.
He was discharged to duty at Moascar and posted to Training Depot on 28 May 1917. From there he was transferred to the Soldiers Club at Kantara on 31 May 1917.
He rejoined his training regiment at Moascar on 28 November 1917 but was sent to 2nd Australian Stationary Hospital and admitted with ‘cardice dilatation’ on 25 December 1917.
He was discharged to duty on 3 February 1918. On 15 February he embarked for passage from Suez in HMS Ulysses on 15 February 1918, disembarked in New Zealand on 26 March 1918 and was discharged on 21 May 1918.
Stanley married Cecilia Duff and had three children: Stella, Irene, Albert James (Tony) Lugg b. 13 January 1926, Akaroa, Canterbury.
Stanley and Cecilia separated before their son, Tony, was born and divorced soon after. Stanley eventually settled in Rangiora, Canterbury where he worked as a tractor dealer with the Nuffield dealership, who had premises on the main street.
He is also believed to have bred horses as a sideline.
He died on 3 June 1965 in Christchurch, aged 69, and is buried at Rangiora – Plot 218.
