Kōrero taurongo
- Flying School, Auckland, New Zealand. Attained Lieutenant 1 April 1918.
Garland received his training at Kohimarama Fly School in 1916.
Partial Military Personnel File requests that Lieut. Garland be "adopted" by the New Zealand committee.
"It will be remembered that Flight-Lieutenant Garland, while flying at a height of 19,000ft, was obliged to make a forced landing at Ostend and was interned on 22nd August, 1917. He attempted and escape from the camp five months ago, but was recaptured, and given two month's solitary confinement for his offence, with the loss of certain privileges...Flight Lieutenant Garland went through twenty-four flights over the German lines" (Internee in Germany. Horowhenua Chronicle , 14 September 1918, Page 4).
Regarded by the German War Office as one of the most dangerous and elusive of the British officers. He attempted to escape eight times from German Prisoner of War camps (Remarkable Careers, Dominion, 14 May 1919).
Attended Waitaki Boys' High School, Oamaru. AWMM
