Next of Kin: Judge R. N. Jones, Native Lds, Wellington (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 1)) AWMM - 30 Oct 1916 Roll Of Honor
Rifleman Thomas Ackerley Jones (killed) was tho eldest son of Judge R. N. Jones, of the Native Land Court, Gisborne. This is the second son Judge Jones has lost in the war, Private Edgar Jones, who went Home and joined the London Scottish, having died of wounds in France about a year ago. Rifleman T. A. Jones was very popular among many friends in Gisborne and Wellington. He was on the staff of the Public Trust Office at Wellington when he enlisted. He had enlisted with the Main Expeditionary Force, but had to remain behind owing to illness supervening and an operation was necessary. He left New Zealand in January last with the N.Z. Rifle Brigade, 4th Battalion, 10th Reinforcements from Auckland, going to France. He was 23 years of age. He was born at Gisborne and educated, at the Gisborne and Mangapapa schools, and Nelson College.Public - Lorraine M - Researcher - 23 September 2015 - Press, Volume LII, Issue 15734, 30 October 1916, Page 9 - 30 Sept 1916 - Word was received to-day that Lance- Corporal T. A. Jones, eldest son of Judge and Mrs R. N. Jones, had been wounded in France on September 17. No details have been given as to the extent of the injuries. Lance-Corporal Jones, who went from Mangapapa school to Nelson College to complete his education, was an officer in the Public Trust Office, Wellington. He volunteered to go with the first reinforcements., but was prevented by illness that necessitated his removal from camp and an operation. As soon as he was again able to pass the medical test he went into camp, and left with the Mounted Rifles, After his arrival in France he had some thrilling experiences, but escaped without any injury that would incapacitate him. His second brother died of wounds received in action in France, and his other brother has completed his period of training, preparatory to receiving orders after being home on final leavePublic - Lorraine M - Researcher - 23 September 2015 - Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XLIII, Issue 14111, 30 September 1916, Page 3
