- Statement summary – Members of the 1st Canterbury Battalion
On the morning of 29 September 1918, seventeen personnel from the 1st Company, 1st Canterbury Battalion, were taken prisoner near Cambrai. Their party, under the command of Lieutenant Owen and Lieutenant Watts, advanced for approximately 90 minutes before losing contact with the main force. The group overshot their objective, a sunken road, and continued advancing under heavy machine-gun fire. Some sought cover in a trench, while others moved into a second sunken road. Attempts to return were blocked by German fire. When they tried to withdraw through a communication trench, they were surrounded and captured. None were wounded at the time of capture.
After capture, they were marched to a dressing station, then carried German wounded to Wallincourt, where they stayed overnight. The following day, they were taken to Caudry and given only barley water. They were then marched 25 kilometres to Le Quesnoy, staying for two weeks in poor conditions, sleeping on a stone floor with one blanket and minimal rations. A further ten-hour march to Feignies followed, with little to no food. After three days in a barn there, they endured a five-day journey in cattle trucks to Dulmen Camp, Germany, receiving limited food during the trip. They were held in quarantine at Dulmen after the Armistice. While the food remained poor, Red Cross parcels were received. Eventually, they were transferred to Holland, then to England.
The following members of the 1st Canterbury Battalion signed this statement: Private Victor Udy Trott (63793), Private Reginald Evans (55460), Private Donald Matheson McRae (6/96), Private Hermann Tritt (6/3491; also served under 824285 and 5/5/1549), Private John Earnest Graham (67625), Private Charles Edward Hack (70857), Private Stephen Vivian Whitta (55570), Private Vernon Maitland Wood (51462), Private George Ewen Hunt (72725), Private William Charles Edward Baldwin (72702), Private Charles Walton (49660), Private Frederick John Payne (64664), Private Ernest Humpherys (68721), Private Alexander McLean (59220), Private Sidney Barlow (62235), Private Daniel James (64847), and Private David Taylor (6/2298).
