Obituary

There are many in Gisborne, particularly the young people, who will regret to learn; that Private August :Paku, who left Gisborne with the First Maori Contingent, has been killed in action. He was a promising young man, 22 years of age and was very popular. August was an adopted son of Mr Pare Keiha, was a signwriter by trade, having just completed his apprenticeship with Mr W Howard when he enlisted.. He was a prominent athlete, and was in the fore front of any pastime he took up. His performances on the football and cricket fields, on the links and as a swimmer .will be remembered with much interest. On two occasions he was runner-up to Mr G. M. Dodgshun for the Poverty Bay golf championship
