  • Tom Richmond was my great Uncle, brother of my Grandfather David Richmond, I was born in Torere, Opotiki. The Richmond or Rihimona whanau are an old family of Torere. They owned all the land in the area, David Richmond, Tom Richmond and their brother and sister gave the land for the Marae and the school, The Rihimona name was changed to Richmond by their Father early 1900 as he worked for the Government and the Government didn't like employee's to have Maori names. Remembering Uncle Tom.

  • Looking through the site for Torere soldiers, mainly to see if Kurei Papuni was a resident of Torere. My husbands great grandfather was the Headmaster at Torere at that time and resided there for many years, being postmaster as well. His name was Armyn Drake and his wife was Kitty. My husbands grandfather grew up in that area and the Drakes were held in high esteem. I have a Korowai that was gifted to my husbands grandmother on her marriage to Bert Drake. Bert and Ellen moved to Taranaki away from his family and other brothers Harold and Stewart who remained in the Opotiki/Te kaha area. Sadly we have lost touch with the family there. Armyn, Kitty and their daughter are buried in the Torere cemetary which we have visited in the past. Anyone who may have old photos or stories of Armyn and Kitty would be appreciated. God bless all who served in the wars of this land.
