Biographical information
- Frederick Kenneth Allen was the eldest son of Pacific trader and shipowner Ernest Frederick Hughes Allen (1867–1924) and Maria Miller Meredith. Ernest was born on Forsyth Island in the Marlborough Sounds and later settled in Samoa, where he established the Samoa Shipping and Trading Company. To provide his sons with a New Zealand education, Ernest arranged for them to live with their aunt, Frances Annie Amelia Allen, in Devonport, Auckland. Frederick was among the four eldest brothers who arrived there in 1899.
Born in Apia, Samoa, Frederick attended Seddon Technical College in Auckland before pursuing a maritime career. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force and served as a Sapper. He later transferred to the Royal Naval Reserve, serving as a Sub Lieutenant during World War I. During World War II he also served with the Royal New Zealand Navy’s Naval Auxiliary Patrol Service.
Four Allen brothers served during World War I: Frederick Kenneth Allen (No. 170) served with the Australian Imperial Force and Royal Naval Reserve; Thomas Meredith Allen (No. 1313) served with the Australian Imperial Force and Royal Flying Corps; Robert Houghton Allen (No. 3165) served with the 1st Pioneer Battalion, Australian Imperial Force; and Ernest Tanumafili “Joe” Allen (No. 2517) served with the Australian Imperial Force, Australian Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. Thomas died on 27 April 1917 from injuries sustained in a flying accident. AWMM
