Biographical information
- James Mulvihill was the son of Mary Mulvihill, of 51 Hargreaves St., Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand.
New Zealand at the Front (a magazine written and published and illustrated in France by men of the New Zealand Division) 1917 issue, page141.
Next of Kin: Mrs M. Mulvihill, Hargraves St, Auckland (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 2)) AWMM - In preparation for an offensive around Ypres mines packed with tons of explosives had been laid in tunnels under enemy lines near the Village of Messines ("Mesen"), West Flanders, Belgium. On 7 June 1917 the mines were detonated, the sound allegedly heard as far away as Dublin. In the wake of the explosion and a subsequent artillery bombardment nine divisions advanced under protection of a creeping artillery barrage, tanks and gas. The cost in human lives was high.
The Messines Ridge British Cemetery was made after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefield around Messines and from a number of small burial grounds in the area. The majority died in the fighting of 1917. There are 1531 Commonwealth servicemen of WW1 buried or commemorated in the cemetery, 954 of the burials are unidentified. The memorial also commemorates other casualties who were buried at other sites where their graves were destroyed by shellfire.
James' Military Personnel File records a burial site by reference to map V3.G.62 - Record of Burial Page 7 X282 (although it is hard to read). It can only be assumed his grave could not be found.Public - Maureen - Other relative - 14 June 2017 - Military Personnel File, Commonwealth War Graves Commission - James Leo Mulvihill was the fourth son of Thomas Mulvihill and Mary Mulvihill (ne Scallen). At the time of his death he had four brothers - Thomas, John, William and Patrick - and one sister, Annie. His father was born in County Galway, Ireland, and his mother was born in County Tyrone, Ireland.Public - Maureen - Other relative - 14 June 2017 - Military Personnel File, Family Papers
